Brewers No. 1 prospect Jimmy Nelson threw seven scoreless innings Friday as Triple-A Nashville defeated New Orleans, 5-0.
Nelson, who is also rated No. 66 on MLB.com's Top 100 Prospects list, began the game by striking out the side in order, and he retired the first six batters he faced. The Zephyrs still had not figured him out when his night ended after seven innings and 85 pitches.
Nelson struck out nine batters, walked two and scattered three hits. He worked efficiently, inducing eight groundball outs and starting 15 of the 24 batters he faced with a first-pitch strike.
With the victory, Nelson improved to 9-2 with a 1.66 ERA. He became the first pitcher in the Pacific Coast League to record 100 strikeouts this season and leads the circuit with 105 strikeouts in 97 1/3 innings. He ranks second in ERA and WHIP (0.93).
First baseman Hunter Morris, the Brewers' No. 10 prospect, helped lead Nashville's offense, going 1-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk.
