Gamel belts big fly in loss to Giants
By Owen Perkins / Special to MLB.com
Brandon Crawford continued his hot hitting and put the Giants on the scoreboard first, lacing a two-run double to left in the bottom of the second inning and a one-run triple to right-center to add a run in the third. The Giants' second-inning rally started with two outs as Hector Sanchez singled on a grounder up the middle that eluded second baseman Taylor Green and trickled into center. Sanchez advanced to second on a wild pitch and Ryan Theriot drew a base on balls before Crawford drove them both home.
The two runs were enough for starter Barry Zito to leave his second start with the lead after three innings of one-hit ball. Zito threw 45 pitches, 30 for strikes, and allowed only two baserunners, yielding an infield single to Mat Gamel in the second and hitting Nyjer Morgan with a pitch in the game's first frame. Morgan remained in the game and played in right field in the bottom of the inning, but he left the game as a precautionary move before the bottom of the second inning.
With Zito out of the game, the Brewers' bats came alive, rallying for three runs in the fourth. After a ground-rule double from Jay Gibbons to open the inning and a single to left from Brooks Conrad, Gamel drove a 2-2 offering from reliever Justin Fitzgerald into the right-field seats for a three-run shot.
The Giants had already built an insurmountable lead with a third-inning rally sparked by a Pablo Sandoval leadoff double. Brandon Belt walked, and Theriot drove them both in with a double to right, then scored on Crawford's triple. Tommy Joseph knocked a two-run shot onto the left-field berm, and the Giants put three more runs together with an Angel Pagan walk, a run-scoring double from Melky Cabrera and a towering two-run homer to the right-field pavilion from Sandoval. Joseph added a second homer in the seventh.
Brewers starter Wily Peralta and reliever Darren Byrd gave up a combined 10 runs in the game's first three innings. Peralta yielded four runs on four hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings, while Byrd allowed six runs on five hits and a walk in one-third of an inning.
Giants up next: The Giants add a key weapon to their arsenal as closer Brian Wilson makes his Cactus League debut Sunday. Buster Posey also returns to make his second start behind the plate after not playing since last May. Southpaw Eric Surkamp (0-1, 8.31) will start for the Giants.
Brewers up next: Yovani Gallardo will be back on the mound Sunday to continue his march to a possible Opening Day assignment. He'll face 23-year-old right-hander Alex White and the Rockies in the Brewers' final game before their first Spring Training off-day. Ryan Braun will be back in left field Sunday after taking Saturday off. The game will be webcast at Brewers.com.
