Crew surprised by Cubs' early demise
Brewers praise talented NL Central winners after NLDS exit
By Adam McCalvy / MLB.com
The Cubs won the NL Central with a 97-64 record, best in the league and 7 1/2 games better than the Brewers. Milwaukee got into the playoffs by winning the NL Wild Card. The Brewers were 7-9 in head-to-head matchups with the Cubs, but won two of three games in the final series of the regular season to clinch their postseason spot. Brewers manager Dale Sveum was surprised to see the Cubs eliminated with three straight losses to the Dodgers. "I think everybody is," Sveum said. "That's a really, really good ballclub to go three and out. I think we go through that a little bit, too, where sometimes you're a little right-handed dominant, and right-handed pitching can shut you down. [The Cubs] obviously didn't play as well as they are capable of playing, and some errors cost them bad." Said Bush: "It just shows you that if you run into a little slump, you can get bounced out real easy. Three games, just like that. That doesn't take anything away from the good team that they had."
