Gallardo throws before Saturday's game

Brewers right-hander looks to recover from knee injury

MILWAUKEE -- Yovani Gallardo threw a series of pitches to live batters before Saturday's game, as the Brewers look to intensify the right-hander's workout routine prior to his Sept. 15 trip to Milwaukee's Maryvale Spring Training complex in Arizona.

Unlike his experience on Tuesday, when Gallardo first threw to live hitters off a mound, the Brewers' starter also handled a round of pitchers' fielding practice. Gallardo has not featured for Milwaukee since tearing his ACL in his right knee in early May.

"I'm just taking it little by little, getting back in the routine of doing the same things," said Gallardo, who threw in the neighborhood of 50 pitches. "The first time I threw [on Tuesday], I let them know [what pitch was coming]. It was kind of like BP. Today, they didn't want me to let anyone know; the catcher called all the pitches."

Though he did not know his workout schedule beyond Saturday, Gallardo expected to continue similar workouts, before departing for Arizona, where his rehab will continue. He still remains unlikely to return to the team before season's end.

"I have to get my whole running form down, things like that," Gallardo said.

Gallardo was not the only bit of injury news before Saturday's game. Center fielder Mike Cameron was scratched with soreness in his left knee, and Gabe Kapler was inserted into the lineup as a precaution.

"It's nothing serious," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "If it's going to hamper him at all, I have a more than adequate replacement in Kapler, so it doesn't make any sense to aggravate anything. Take the day or two or whatever it is."

Yost also said no restrictions would be placed on Ben Sheets, making his first appearance on Saturday since leaving with groin tightness on Monday.
