Gagne could be activated Saturday

Injured Brewers righty on DL with tendinitis since May 23

MINNEAPOLIS -- Eric Gagne's return to the Brewers appears imminent.

The right-hander flew into Minneapolis on Friday afternoon and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. If all goes well, he could be activated at that time.

Gagne was placed on the disabled list on May 23 with tendinitis in his right rotator cuff.

The reliever's two-game rehab stint at Triple-A Nashville was a mixed bag. Against Memphis on Tuesday, Gagne pitched a scoreless inning and had a strikeout. But on Thursday at Round Rock, he couldn't get out of his assigned inning, surrendering two hits, a walk and two earned runs while recording just two outs.

"His first outing was very good," manager Ned Yost said. "His second outing was a bit rocky."

Salomon Torres will keep the closer's role when Gagne returns. Torres has converted all 12 of his save opportunities since taking the job over on May 24.

"I'm going to keep Torres as the stopper," Yost said. "[Gagne will] pitch in the seventh, eighth innings. [If] Torres needs a break, he'll get a chance to close."
