Gagne throws first bullpen session

No timetable on return for Brewers' injured closer

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers had good health-related news on Saturday when injured reliever David Riske threw a successful simulated inning, but they were unsure about closer Eric Gagne's rehab status.

"There's nothing new to report," assistant general manager Gord Ash said before Saturday's game. "He's not on the same timetable [as Riske]."

But Gagne did take another step forward on Sunday morning as he progressed from long tosses in the outfield during warmups to a short bullpen session off a mound for the first time since mid-May.

The session lasted about 15 minutes and the righty threw about two dozen pitches.

The injured closer has been on the disabled list since May 21 with rotator cuff tendinitis in his right shoulder. His return date is still uncertain, but the bullpen session is a step in the right direction.
