MILWAUKEE -- The Milwaukee Brewers and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education are teaming up to provide "Brewers Baseball Basics for Women," a one-of-a-kind baseball instructional program designed to offer a unique introduction and insight to professional baseball and the Milwaukee Brewers. The program quickly sold out in 2007, the program's inaugural year.
Brewers Baseball Basics for Women is a two-day program that combines a classroom session with a behind the scenes exploration of Miller Park. The introductory class will be held on Wednesday, August 20 at the downtown UWM School of Continuing Education, beginning at 6:30 pm. On this evening, UWM Instructor Mariann Maris will introduce "The Basics of Baseball" in a clear and concise manner to help develop a better understanding and appreciation for the game of baseball. Participants will also have the opportunity to attend a session titled "Advanced Baseball for the Experienced Fan."
Special guests for the introductory session will include Brewers Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Melvin, Brewers Vice President - General Counsel Marti Wronski, Brewers Senior Director of Broadcasting and Entertainment Aleta Mercer, and WISN-TV sports reporter Stephanie Sutton. They will each share their experiences and expertise on Major League Baseball.
At the end of the evening, one lucky participant will be chosen to throw out the first pitch on Saturday, August 23 when the Brewers play host to the Pittsburgh Pirates at 6:05 pm.
The program continues at Miller Park on Saturday, August 23. A three hour session, from 10 am to 1 pm, will feature a stadium tour of Miller Park that includes an inside access to the Brewers clubhouse, a visit to the broadcast booth and a trip to the bullpen. Tour members will also get to experience the role of a Brewers relief pitcher with the opportunity to pitch from the bullpen mound during the tour.
Following the tour, members of the Brewers grounds crew will lead participants through an on-field experience and a close up look at the equipment used by Major League players. Participants will also have the opportunity to try on one of the famous Klement's Racing Sausage costumes and race around the Miller Park warning track.
To cap off the session, Brewers television announcers Brian Anderson and Bill Schroeder, Brewers Manager Ned Yost, and a Brewers player and wife will join the participants for lunch. Afterward, there will be an opportunity for a question and answer session. All participants will receive a Brewers t-shirt and two infield box tickets to that evening's Brewers vs. Pirates game.
Women interested in participating in the Brewers Baseball Basics for Women experience should contact the UWM School of Continuing Education at (414) 227-3200 or visit online at www.sce-arts.uwm.edu. The registration fee is priced at $149 which includes a commemorative t-shirt, lunch, two game tickets and the opportunity to throw out the first pitch on August 23. Registration will be limited to the first 80 entrants.
All proceeds benefit Brewers Charities and the UWM College for Kids SMILE (Scholarship Money Investing in Lifelong Education) fund which provides opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to participate in College for Kids programs. In addition, the Brewers will also offer game tickets to scholarship recipients.
A ceremonial check presentation with Brewers Charities and the UWM College for Kids SMILE Program will take place during pre-game activities on August 23.
