Tomo Ohka hosts sixth annual charity tour

MILWAUKEE -- The Sixth Annual Tomo Ohka Charity Tour is slated to begin Sunday, August 20 when 12 children travel to Milwaukee from Japan as guests of Brewers pitcher Tomo Ohka. The tour, which began in 2001 while Tomo was with Montreal Expos, is comprised of a trip to the United States, tickets to Major League baseball games as well as other planned events such a baseball game against a Milwaukee-area youth team.
The 12 children participating in the tour were selected by the Board of Directors of "Field of Dreams" in a two-step process. In the first step, children who wanted to participate in the tour wrote an essay regarding the topic "My Dream". Twelve finalists were selected in step two via an interview process by the Board of Directors. "Field of Dreams" is a non-profit organization in Japan whose mission is to make a contribution to development of local community, as well as life-time sports for citizens, through various activities. In addition to the Tomo Ohka Charity Tour, another primary activity of "Field of Dreams" is the Tomo Ohka Baseball Club in Japan.
Although the Charity Tour originally focused on disadvantaged children from Tomo's hometown of Kyoto, participation in the Tour is now open to children from throughout Japan, most of them from orphanages. Some of the activities for their trip to Milwaukee/Chicago are:
Attending a pair of games at Miller Park
Watching batting practice on the field prior to a game at Miller Park
Attending a dinner hosted by Tomo at Friday's Front Row Restaurant at Miller Park following Sunday's contest with the Houston Astros
Playing a baseball game and participating in a post-game tailgate party with a Milwaukee-area youth team at Helfaer Field
Taking a behind-the-scenes tour of Miller Park
Two television crews from Japan will also travel with the kids and document their trip.
