Matusz scratched; Arrieta to face Pirates
Orioles left-hander struck in nose by own bunt in batting practice
Orioles right-hander Jake Arrieta will start Wednesday against the Pirates in place of southpaw Brian Matusz, who suffered a nose contusion Tuesday during batting practice.
A bunt attempt came back and hit Matusz while he was in the indoor cages in preparation for Baltimore's upcoming Interleague road trip. X-rays taken Tuesday evening were negative and Matusz said he was mentally prepared to pitch, pending potential swelling.
However, the decision was made Wednesday to scratch the 25-year-old.
Matusz (5-6, 4.82 ERA) lasted just two innings in his most recent outing, a 7-0 loss to Boston. That snapped a streak of four consecutive quality starts submitted by the former first-round Draft pick.
Arrieta opened the season in the Orioles' rotation, but was to move to the bullpen after racking up a 2-8 record and 6.32 ERA in 13 starts. He surrendered nine runs on 11 hits in four innings in his last start, which came in a 9-6 loss to the Phillies on Friday.
