CHICAGO -- As the current manager of the Astros, Cecil Cooper regularly competes against Prince Fielder. As a former Milwaukee first baseman, Cooper is competing against Fielder in a different forum: the Brewers' All-Time 9.
More than 4.1 million votes have been cast since the 9/9/09 debut of the "All-Time 9s," a platform for fans to debate the greatest single-season performances for all 30 Major League franchises. The voting marks the start of MLB.com's Lineup Card campaign, a gathering place for the posting and never-ending discussion of the greatest past and present lineups.
Fielder and Cooper are locked in one of the closest Brewers battles, with Fielder ahead by about 400 votes for his work in 2007, when he crushed 50 home runs. In 1980, Cooper batted .352 with 122 RBIs.
Here's how some of the team's other close races are shaping up:
At designated hitter, there is a faceoff between a pair of Hall of Famers: Paul Molitor and Hank Aaron. Molitor is out in front for his 1987 season, when he hit .353 and stole 45 bases.
Ben Ogilvie, Gorman Thomas and Geoff Jenkins are the leaders in the outfield, but Jeromy Burnitz, Sixto Lezcano and Larry Hisle remain in contention.
Ryan Braun now roams left field for the Brewers, but his work at the hot corner two seasons ago, when he launched 37 homers, has given him a comfortable lead over Jeff Cirillo.
