Gamel becomes a first-time father
Reliever Coffey awaiting arrival of his third child, a son
PHOENIX -- Mat Gamel is the Brewers' newest proud papa.
Gamel's fiancee, Julianne, gave birth to the couple's first child on Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla. Audrey Maddox weighed seven pounds, eight ounces, and "everyone is doing well," according to Brewers media relations director Mike Vassallo. The third baseman, hampered by a sore shoulder in camp, traveled home for the birth and is expected back in Brewers camp on Monday. He's one of the Brewers' top prospects and probably will begin the year at Triple-A Nashville, but manager Ken Macha is eager to see a healthy Gamel in action before the end of Spring Training. Another expectant father, reliever Todd Coffey, remains in a holding pattern. He originally was to travel home to North Carolina on Friday, but doctors decided to delay inducing Nikki Coffey's labor for another week. The Coffeys, who have two young daughters, are expecting a son this time.
