MILWAUKEE -- One more down, two to go.
With Prince Fielder's two-year contract in the books, the Brewers still face the prospect of an arbitration hearing with two players. Outfielder Corey Hart is seeking $3.8 million, and the team offered $2.7 million. Second baseman Rickie Weeks is seeking $2.8 million, and the Brewers offered $2 million.
According to assistant general manager Gord Ash, the team has not negotiated with representatives for Hart or Weeks since the sides swapped figures on Tuesday.
"I'm sure both sides are really busy right now," Weeks said. "I think it will pick up soon."
Both players were in Milwaukee on Friday for "Bob Uecker's Winter Warm-Up," a variety show at the Riverside Theater. They were also to participate in Saturday's "Brewers On Deck" event.
Brewers principal owner Mark Attanasio was also on hand, and said that the Brewers would be open to proposals from the agents for Hart and Weeks about multiyear contracts. More likely, the team will ink one-year deals with both, then identify a number of players during Spring Training to approach about extensions.
Hart almost certainly would be in that group, as would right-hander Yovani Gallardo, who is not yet arbitration-eligible.
In the meantime, Brewers officials will continue talks with Weeks' representative, Lon Babby, and Hart's agent, Jeff Berry. The sides can negotiate up to a hearing date in February, at which time a three-member panel of judges would listen to arguments and choose one salary or the other.
It can be an uncomfortable process. Hart hopes to avoid it.
"I don't think that as a player you want to go [to a hearing]," said Hart, who admitted that he was surprised by the $1.1 million gap between his proposal and the team's. "Ultimately, you want to get something done, but who knows? It's awesome to see Prince [get a contract]. As a group, most of us want to be here. We want to stay in Milwaukee."
