MILWAUKEE -- David Riske was very sharp in a 38-pitch simulated inning on Saturday afternoon, and he was even better in his rehab assignment Tuesday night for Triple-A Nashville.
Riske struck out all three batters he faced in his one inning of work for Nashville. He needed just 12 pitches to strike out the side, and all three batters whiffed at strike three.
Before the Brewers' series opener with Toronto on Tuesday, Riske was one subject manager Ned Yost was excited to discuss.
"Riske, now there is something to talk about," Yost said. "His outing [on Saturday] when he threw the sim game was very impressive. We know he's going to come back. He's back to being [himself]."
Riske has now had two very impressive outings back-to-back, and isn't expected to need much more time before returning to the Milwaukee bullpen. Even before Riske threw on Tuesday, Yost was looking forward to the right-hander's return.
"We'll see how he feels [after Tuesday's outing]," Yost said. "He might have one more [rehab outing]. He might not. But if he throws as good as he did the other day, I don't see a reason for it."
Injured closer Eric Gagne also threw off a mound on Tuesday, marking his second outing off a slope since Sunday.
Gagne has been on the disabled list since May 23 after feeling tightness in his right shoulder. He was nearly silenced on Tuesday because he had a pair of wisdom teeth removed, but he did manage to say the outing went well.
He plans to throw another bullpen session on Thursday, this one a little longer and more intense, and then a simulated inning on Saturday if all goes well.
"He's getting better," Yost said. "Everybody's getting better."
