Torres at head of closer committee
Milwaukee (26-27) vs. Atlanta (28-25), Thursday, 12:05 p.m. CT
MILWAUKEE -- Even after notching his fourth save on Wednesday in place of injured Brewers closer Eric Gagne, Salomon Torres refused to appoint himself chairman of the team's "closer by committee."
"Don't read too much into it," Torres said after closing a 1-0 win over Atlanta. "I'm just subbing right now. I'm taking the ball whenever they need me." Manager Ned Yost went a bit further. He was not ready to give up the luxury of using different pitchers in the ninth as circumstances dictate, but he conceded that Torres has done everything asked of him. "We're still by committee, but, yeah, he's head of the committee," Yost said. Now the question becomes whether Yost would use Torres if needed on Thursday, when the Brewers and Braves finish a three-game series at Miller Park. Consistently, Yost has shut down relievers, other than Gagne, after they appeared in three straight games. That's exactly what Torres has done over the Brewers' three-game winning streak, notching two saves and a win in a trio of one-run games. "If we use him today," Yost said before Wednesday's game, "somebody else will be closing tomorrow." That would be fine with Torres. "I keep in my mind that he can use me in any particular moment," Torres said. Torres finished 2006 and started 2007 as Pittsburgh's closer before a sore elbow cost him that job. He had spent most of this season alongside right-handers Guillermo Mota and David Riske and left-hander Brian Shouse in a setup role for Gagne, but with Gagne and Riske on the DL, roles were shifted. Does it take a different mindset to close games? "No," Torres insisted. "It looks like different pitchers a little bit, but it's not like I want to do something extra or throw extra hard to get the job done. That's when you get in trouble." The Brewers have won each of their last three games by a single run and improved to 11-6 in one-run games. A win Thursday would bump them back to .500 for the first time since they were 20-20 on May 14. "You want to win by 15 runs, but you take what you can get," Torres said. Pitching matchupMIL: RHP Seth McClung (2-1, 3.55 ERA)
McClung turned in a terrific performance in his first Major League start in two years. He used first-pitch strikes to keep his pitch count low. Despite throwing just 68 pitches, he made it through five innings and picked up the win. ATL: RHP Jorge Campillo (1-0, 0.86 ERA)
Campillo left after the fourth inning of Saturday's start against the D-backs, but the 29-year-old reliever-turned-starter said he expects to make his next start on Thursday against the Brewers. As a starter, Campillo has not allowed an earned run. In 10 innings, he has given up just six hits. Campillo has three blisters on his index and middle fingers, and said it hurts when he grips the seams. Tidbits

"He got better and better and better as the night went on," Yost said. ... Longtime official scorer Tim O'Driscoll, in his 22nd season calling hits and errors at Brewers games, is in his 34th season as Arrowhead High School's varsity baseball coach and will be in the dugout for his 1,000th varsity game on Thursday. He already owns the state record for wins and, at 60, he still throws batting practice every day. Tickets
