NEW YORK -- Yovani Gallardo beat the Brewers to the Big Apple this weekend and pronounced himself ready to pitch. Whether he's allowed depends mostly on the weather.

The team recalled Gallardo, who has been building himself back up from left knee surgery, from a rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Nashville, but did not activate him from the disabled list. He arrived before the rest of the team on Thursday, threw in the bullpen on Friday afternoon and then went into wait-and-see mode. Gallardo is insurance against a bad weather forecast throughout the weekend, and could be activated if the Brewers' starting rotation is jumbled by rain delays.

"I feel ready to go," Gallardo said. "My arm feels good, everything feels good, if I'm needed. ... I feel good enough to be able to start here, but that's not my decision. I'm going to accept whatever they decide to do."

If Milwaukee does not need Gallardo this weekend, manager Ned Yost wants him to return to Nashville for one more rehab start. Gallardo could then join the Brewers for good next weekend in Cincinnati.

Gallardo was a spark for the Brewers last season, going 9-5 with a 3.67 ERA in the big leagues. In two starts for Nashville, Gallardo was 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA.

"It's been going pretty good," he said. "My arm feels real good, actually, and my knee, I've had no problems at all. I was able to swing the bat down there, run the bases, and there were no problems."

Gallardo had arthroscopic surgery on Feb. 19 to clean up a lateral meniscus tear. By March 21, he was pitching in a Minor League game.

"Once I threw that first game and I knew that it felt good, I pretty much forgot about it and went on with the things I had to work on to get ready," he said.
