Brewers at the plate: Geoff Jenkins doubled and singled and Jeff Cirillo also had two hits. Tony Gwynn Jr. tripled against Barry Zito.

A's at the plate: Mark Kotsay hit his first home run of the spring season, highlighting a five-run first inning. Jay Payton had three hits, including a double.

Brewers on the mound: Starter Ben Sheets left the game with irritation in his right shoulder -- the same area which led to a season-ending injury last season. He allowed five runs on six hits in 1/3 inning. Dennis Sarfate pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings.

A's on the mound: Zito allowed two runs on five hits in three innings, while Justin Duchscherer pitched a scoreless inning in his first spring appearance.

Cactus League records: Brewers 6-3; A's 2-6.

Up next: The Brewers play a pair of split-squad games on Friday, with the Arizona Diamondbacks playing at 2:05 p.m. CT and Team Japan playing at 8:05 p.m. CT Left-hander Dana Eveland (0-1, 36.00) takes the mound against the Diamondbacks. He'll be opposed by right-hander Russ Ortiz (0-1, 18.00). Left-hander Doug Davis (0-0, 4.50) gets the nod against Team Japan.

The A's will send a split squad to Surprise, with right-hander Rich Harden making his spring debut against Jeremy Affeldt and the Kansas Royals at 2:05 p.m. CT Kirk Saarloos (0-0, 2.25) makes his second start of the spring against the Angels in Tempe at 2:05 p.m. CT. He'll be opposed by Joe Saunders.
