MILWAUKEE -- After a five-hour, 22-minute affair on Thursday that forced manager Ned Yost to use six pitchers in 15 innings, the Brewers needed bullpen help.

Help arrived on Friday.

The team recalled right-handed rookie Chris Saenz all the way from Double-A Huntsville and placed left-handed starter Chris Capuano on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 19, with a strained left quadriceps. Until Friday the Brewers had been the only team in the Majors without a player on the DL this season.

Saenz (pronounced "signs"), who will wear No. 38, will make his Major League debut the first time he appears in a game. At Huntsville he was 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts.

When exactly will that debut come? It depends what happens Friday night, when the Brewers face the Cardinals in the opener of a three-game series. Struggling right-hander Matt Kinney will make the start, and right-handers Brooks Kieschnick and Jeff Bennett are the only relievers who did not appear in Thursday's marathon.

If Saenz is not needed on Friday, he could be a candidate to make Capuano's scheduled start on Saturday afternoon. As of noon CT on Friday, the team had not listed a probable starter for the second game against St. Louis.

Capuano is eligible to come off the DL on May 4. Even as late as Thursday evening, he was hopeful about making his weekend start after throwing about 35 pitches off the bullpen mound before the game. He was scheduled to try fielding and baserunning drills on Friday.

Capuano sustained the injury running out a ground ball on April 18 at Houston.
