CHC@CIN: Arroyo fans three, allows three runs in win

The Phillies haven't been kind to Bronson Arroyo during his 13-year career.

Arroyo's 7.28 ERA against the Phillies is his highest against any team. They haven't let up recently, either. Arroyo's ERA in his last six starts against the Phillies? 10.28.

The right-hander will try to vanquish those demons on Wednesday, when the Reds and Phillies square off in the third game of a four-game series.

Arroyo's struggles against Philadelphia aren't just confined to the regular season. He faced the Phillies in Game 2 of the 2010 National League Division Series. The Reds made four errors and lost, 7-4.

In four starts in August, Arroyo has posted a 4.91 ERA in 25 2/3 innings. He went 6 1/3 frames against the Cubs on Friday, giving up three runs on nine hits.

The Phillies will counter with right-hander Vance Worley, who is pitching with a bone chip in his right elbow. Worley allowed four runs in each of his last three starts and has a 7.90 ERA in his last 13 2/3 innings.

Worley said after his last start that the bone chip isn't related to his recent struggles.

"Things just aren't going my way," Worley said. "Everything feels good. Velocity is there. The ball is breaking like I want it to break. I'm just not catching the breaks. Last year I got myself into trouble, but I got out of it. Why? I don't know. The hits they're getting off me are pitches I'm missing with."

Reds: Ondrusek optioned to Louisville
With a two-game suspension issued to catcher Devin Mesoraco, the Reds needed to make a roster move on Tuesday to avoid playing with only one catcher.

Reliever Logan Ondrusek got the bad news. The Reds brought catcher Dioner Navarro up from Triple-A Louisville and sent Ondrusek down.

"There are always tough decisions in life, and all of them don't go your way," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "We only had a couple of guys with options that could be sent down. Anybody else would have to go through waivers and we could end up losing them. [Ondrusek] pitched two innings [Monday] night, so he really couldn't help us for a couple of days."

Ondrusek allowed two runs on three hits over two innings on Monday against the Phillies. He is 3-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 53 games this season.

"He's struggled a little bit lately himself," Baker said. "This is a time for him to get his game together and come back to help us even more. It wasn't an easy decision and it wasn't easy telling him."

Ondrusek must stay in the Minors for at least 10 days, barring injury.

• Reds Minor Leaguer Billy Hamilton stole his 146th base on Tuesday night with Double-A Pensacola, breaking the professional baseball record for stolen bases in a season. He stole three bases in his first two at-bats to pass Vince Coleman, who stole 145 bases in 1983.

Phillies: Reliever Aumont ready for Major League debut
Phillippe Aumont, ranked by MLB.com as the Phillies' No. 7 prospect, was called up to the team on Monday night with reliever Jeremy Horst taking paternity leave until Wednesday.

Aumont watched as several of his teammates from Triple-A Lehigh Valley were called to the Majors before he was.

"Those are things I can't really control," Aumont said. "I was excited for those guys. They deserved it. They pitched well. It was their turn. I knew I still had to work on some stuff. Every day, keep going to work, just grinding. Whenever I get the call I get the call, and that would be the day I had a big smile on my face."

Aumont allowed 34 hits in 44 1/3 innings with Lehigh Valley, striking out 59 and walking 34.
