Floyd hurls 6 1/3 scoreless innings vs. Cubs

It hasn't been a great season for White Sox right-hander Gavin Floyd so far.

Floyd owns a 5.20 ERA, which is his highest since first joining Chicago's starting rotation in 2007, when he finished with a 5.27 ERA.

He is 5-7 and his track record against the Twins, whom he'll face Tuesday night at Target Field, isn't promising. He is 4-11 with a 6.29 ERA in 16 career starts against Minnesota.

The one positive for Floyd is he's coming off one of his better outings of the season. He fired 6 1/3 scoreless innings against the Cubs and allowed only four hits last Wednesday.

"I just want to go out there and keep us in the ballgame and play well," Floyd said afterward. "I know what God has given me with talent. I just want to try and go out there and get the job done."

It will be Floyd's first game with new third baseman Kevin Youkilis in the lineup. Youkilis was traded from the Red Sox on Sunday and made his debut Monday night. He went 1-for-4 with a single in his last at-bat.

The White Sox are hoping the production from their third basemen, who are last in the Majors in batting average, home runs, RBIs, slugging and on-base percentage, will soon go up.

"I can't guarantee anything with stats and all that," Youkilis said. "But I know one thing: that I'll come out here every day and play the game right and give it my all."

He'll hope for better success against Twins starter Liam Hendriks, who is 0-4 with a 7.39 ERA. Hendriks has made 10 career starts and is still searching for his first career victory.

White Sox: Beckham moved to the No. 9 spot
• With the addition of Youkilis, Gordon Beckham was pushed from the No. 2 spot in the batting order to the nine-hole. Beckham was batting .317 over his last 25 games and the team was 25-19 with him batting second. Manager Robin Ventura said he's not concerned about the move.

"He'll still do well," Ventura said. "He'll be fine. It puts him in a nice spot."

• The White Sox have won six of their last eight games at Target Field after losing eight of their first 11.

Twins: Capps lands on the DL
• Twins closer Matt Capps was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation Monday. He underwent an MRI that revealed no structural damage and hopes to be back after the All-Star break. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Jared Burton and Glen Perkins will split closer duties in his absence.

"We'll mix and match," Gardenhire said. "Whoever in the eighth inning doesn't pitch in a situational [role] is going to close it. It's nice to have to two guys who can throw the ball like that and make pitches when they need to."

• Obviously, he doesn't want teams in the division to get better, but Gardenhire commended the White Sox for making the move to get Youkilis.

"He knows how to play and he knows how to win," Gardenhire said. "It's a big pickup for them. They were out there searching and they got a good baseball player who's been there and done it."

• Joe Mauer has 13 career home runs against the White Sox. It's the catcher's most versus any Major League opponent.

Worth Noting
• The Twins are 26-12 against the White Sox at home dating back to Sept. 23, 2007.

• Trevor Plouffe has hit 11 of his 15 home runs this season while playing third base. It's the fifth-most at the position in the Majors and third-most in the American League behind Miguel Cabrera and Mike Moustakas. His .667 slugging percentage is highest among Major League third baseman with at least 100 at-bats.
