Manuel to give a slugger some rest

In the midst of a season-high five-game losing streak and a struggling offense, manager Jerry Manuel said adamantly Tuesday he expected to sit David Wright, and possibly Gary Sheffield. Sheffield is out of Wednesday's lineup, but Wright -- who has only sat one game this season -- is in.

Mets probable pitcher

Mike Pelfrey

  • #34 RHP
  • (5-3) 4.67 ERA 37 SO
Pelfrey was once again the victim of one bad inning on Friday night against the Yankees. This time it was the second, in which he allowed four hits that, combined with three Mets errors, led to four runs. Pelfrey responded by retiring 11 of the last 12 batters he faced. Pelfrey is 0-1 with a 7.20 ERA in one career start against the Brewers, a 12-3 loss on May 12, 2007. Pelfrey finished this June with a 1-2 mark and a 6.31 ERA; he is 6-4 lifetime with a 3.79 ERA in July.

Yovani Gallardo

  • #49 RHP
  • (8-4) 2.86 ERA 102 SO
Gallardo gave up a home run in the first inning in his last start, but allowed just three other hits the rest of the way to pick up his eighth win against the Giants on Friday. Gallardo allowed four hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out nine and walking three in his ninth quality start of the season. Gallardo faced the Mets earlier this year when he threw six scoreless innings in a 1-0 Milwaukee loss on April 18. Gallardo took a no-decision in that game, finishing with seven strikeouts.

Pelfrey frees Mets from skid (38-39) (42-36)

Mets 1, Brewers 0

Mets end slide

Mike Pelfrey scattered six hits over a season-high 7 2/3 shutout innings, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless ninth to preserve Pelfrey's gem and snap the Mets' five-game skid. New York had just five hits, as well, but one of those was Ryan Church's RBI single in the sixth.

Tough 'L' for Gallardo

Yovani Gallardo struck out a career-high 12 batters while walking just a pair, but he took the loss after allowing one run in seven innings. The Brewers were unable to support their starter, amassing just five hits off Mike Pelfrey and the Mets, while falling short of a three-game sweep.
