Focus Area
Comments
Hitting ability:Walla can really hit. He's in a bad league, so he doesn't get pitched to and does have a tendency to chase bad pitches when frustrated.
Power:He's got a lot of power, especially for someone his size. It should be better than average in the future.
Running speed:Shows below-average speed.
Base running:It's not a part of his game.
Arm strength:Has a good arm; also pitches and has touched 90 mph off the mound.
Fielding:He'll be limited to an outfield corner in the future.
Range:Lack of speed limits his range and is the reason he'll have to play a corner down the road.
Physical Description:Walla is a small but well-built athlete, kind of a Brian Giles type.
Medical Update:Healthy.
Strengths: Good bat potential; projectable power. Great makeup.
Weaknesses:Will be limited to a corner outfield spot and he doesn't run, so the bat better play.
Summary:Every draft seems to have some high school players who are just plain hitters. Walla is one of those in 2009. Not the biggest guy in the world, he's stronger than you'd think and should hit for at least average power in the future. He can't run, so he'll be limited to a corner OF spot, but he's got the arm for it and should have more than enough bat as well. A really good student with plus makeup, he maximizes the tools he does have and could be a middle-of-the-order corner bat in the future.
