2008 BREWER CHARITIES/ALLAN H. SELIG SCHOLARS PROGRAM - GENERAL INFORMATION

The Brewers Charities/Allan H. Selig Scholars Program was created in the name of former Brewers’ President and current Commissioner of Baseball Allan H. (Bud) Selig. Funding for the scholarships is the result of proceeds donated by Major League Baseball, from the All-Star Workout Day, part of the 2002 All-Star festivities held at Miller Park. Commissioner Selig has deep ties to Milwaukee and Wisconsin and he has also had a long-term commitment to educational excellence. A graduate of Washington High School in Milwaukee and the University of Wisconsin, Commissioner Selig believes the opportunity to pursue a college education should be made available to all young people, particularly those who show great promise but are unable to afford it. So far, nearly forty students have been awarded scholarships under the program.

In 2008, up to six students, who must be graduating seniors from the Class of 2008 in Wisconsin high schools, will be selected for the scholarships. The scholarships must be directed to a college or university based in the State of Wisconsin. Students can receive up to $2,500, renewable each year and up to $10,000 over four years, depending on their course of study. The scholarships will be aimed at students who intend to pursue careers in sports management, sports journalism, sports marketing, sports medicine or a related field. Scholarships are based on grades, attendance, extracurricular activities and financial need. The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce, which has been operating its own scholarship program for qualified, low-income students since 1991, provides administrative support to the Brewers Charities/Selig Scholars Program.
